Rise Empowers Cost Reduction and Revenue Growth Through Strategic Partnership with AWS

A Gartner, Inc. survey revealed that environmental change is amongst the top 3 strategic technology trends for 2024.

It’s well known within the ad tech industry, that the storage of data within data centers is one of the big factors that leads to a higher carbon footprint. Being aware of our impact on the environment, Rise was seeking a stable partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS), to foster more sustainable business practices. By running the vast majority of our workload on AWS’ Graviton processor we managed to improve processes, which led to cost reduction and a growth in revenue.

This blog aims to inform about the necessity of improving business efficiency and to start a conversation with business leaders that highlights the opportunity for carbon footprint reduction through sharing in a common responsibility.

What is AWS’s Graviton and what are its benefits?

AWS has crafted Graviton processors for optimal price performance in cloud workloads. These processors, available as one of three options, drive various Amazon EC2 instance types designed for general-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, and storage-optimized applications. Graviton-powered instances are accessible in most AWS Regions.

Introduced in 2019, Graviton2 represents the second generation of AWS Graviton processors. Instance types leveraging Graviton2 deliver up to a 40% improvement in price performance compared to fifth-generation instances. Graviton3-based instances use up to 60% less energy for the same performance than comparable EC2 instances, enabling you to reduce your carbon footprint in the cloud.

The Graviton processor’s feature set is fine-tuned for cloud workloads and offers the following advantages:

  • Efficiently handle a diverse range of cloud workloads
  • Maximize cost-effectiveness
  • Contribution to sustainability objectives

How does Graviton help Rise be more cost efficient and sustainable?

In the period from 2021 to 2022, our carbon emissions surged, experiencing a growth of over 100%, soaring from 12 MTCO2e to 25 MTCO2e. However, in May 2023, we made a significant move by transferring all our servers to the Graviton processor, resulting in a more sustainable trajectory. Despite witnessing a subsequent 10% increase in carbon emissions, rising from 25 MTCO2e to 28 MTCO2e, this growth was notably tempered.

Had we not transitioned to the Graviton processor, projections indicate our carbon emissions could have risen to 38 MTCO2e or even higher by the year’s end. This strategic shift underscores our commitment to environmental responsibility and the positive impact of innovative technologies on our carbon footprint.

The rise for more sustainability

In the ongoing quest for greater sustainability, Rise has embraced a series of initiatives in collaboration with AWS. A significant stride has been made in data storage, where for now we’ve reached maximum sustainability goals. Regarding our data storage, we hope to be even more sustainable in the future.

Additionally, Rise has strategically harnessed the potential of Amazon’s EC2 cloud services, leveraging their efficiency and adaptability to bolster our sustainability efforts. A pivotal move in this direction involves the meticulous selection of regions for our data centers.
Currently, Rise utilizes data centers powered by renewable energy sources, exemplified by locations such as North Virginia, Oregon, and Ireland. This conscientious region selection aligns with our commitment to optimizing sustainability across all facets of our operations.

Better together

Rise stands as a testament to the power of collaboration. As industry leaders, we recognize the potential for positive change that arises when organizations join forces. Our partnership with AWS has been instrumental in propelling us forward, unlocking new possibilities and efficiencies. [Still have a long way to go – but we hope that this prosperous relationship will flourish]

By sharing our challenges, and successes, we aim to inspire others in the industry to embrace their sustainability goals by collaboration and forging meaningful partnerships.
